Edmund Kemper(1948) is an American serial killer who was active in the 1970' He is also known as the "Co-ed Killer" due to his targeting of female college students. Kemper’s crimes were particularly gruesome, as he not only murdered his victims but also mutilated and decapitated their bodies. Kemper was born on December 18, 1948, in Burbank, California. He had A troubled childhood, with an abusive mother who frequently belittled him and his father who was largely absent from his life. Kemper's mother eventually forced him to live in a basement because she believed he was a threat to his sisters. He later claimed that this experience fueled his violent fantasies.
Kemper committed his first murders at the age of 15, when he shot his grandparents. On August 27,1964, Kemper's grandmother was sitting at the kitchen table and Kemper began arguing. Eventually, Kemper shot her in the head. When his grandfather came home from grocery shopping, Kemper went outside and fatally shot him in the driveway. When he was questioned about this incident, he said that he "just wanted to See what it felt like to kill Grandma", and that he killed his grandfather because he knew he would be angry at him for what he had done to his grandmother. He was subsequently sent to a mental institution, where he underwent psychiatric evaluation and treatment. He was eventually released and lived with his mother in Santa Cruz, California.
Between May 1972 and April 1973, Kemper embarked on a murder spree that started with six female students and ended with the murders of his mother and her best friend. Kemper would pick up female students who were hitchhiking, take them to isolated areas where he would stab, shoot or smother his victims. He would then take their lifeless bodies back to his apartment where he would rape their severed heads and bodies and then dissect them. He killed five college co-eds, one high school student, his mother and ending with his mother's best friend. He also engaged in Necrophilia and cannibalism with some of his victims. He would often go hunting for victims after his mother's outbursts towards him.
Kemper was eventually caught and confessed to his crimes. He was found guilty in November 19773 of eight counts of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. He is currently serving his sentence at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, California.
Kemper's case has been the subject of numerous books, documentaries, and films, including the Netflix series "Mindhunter." Despite his horrific crimes, Kemper has been a subject of fascination for some due to his intelligence and willingness to discuss his motivations with psychologists and law enforcement officials.
